Nagarhole national park

Nature is all about beauty. Love nature and you can find beauty everywhere. Nature is a manifestation of God. Wildlife defines the beauty of nature. Wildlife covers both flora and fauna. There is a saying that one can measure the greatness and moral progress of a nation by looking at how it treats its animals. To protect and preserve wildlife, many wildlife sanctuaries have come into being. The main aim of sanctuaries is to protect nature and the species which are on the brink of extinction. There are many wildlife sanctuaries which are playing a major role in the conservation of wildlife.

Nagarhole National Park is situated Kodagu district and Mysore district in Karnataka. The park is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park. The park comes under ‘Project Tiger’ which aims at preserving endangered wildlife species. It is located in the Western Ghats and is a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The park has a rich population of animals and plants. This park is under consideration by UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as World Heritage Site. The park gets its name from streams. Naga means snake and hole mean streams. The Nagarhole national park was once the hunting reserve of Maharaja of Mysore. Hyder Ali tried to use this reserve to train elephants in the wild into domestic ones. He tried a lot to capture wild elephants but it was not easy.

After years of trial and failure, he left an inscription of a stone that no one would be able to do so. In the 19th century, Captain Sanderson tried and succeeded in the mission. Those camps can be still seen inside the park. It was just 258 square kilometer in area.

This reserve included forest areas of Nalkeri In Kodagu, Arkeri, and others. In 1974, other areas of reserved forest were joined with the hunting reserve and were formally announced as Nagarhole National Park.

The park covered 643.39 square kilometers in 1988. In 2008, the park was recognized as a tiger reserve. From 1870 to 1980, 14% of the park was cleared to plant teak trees. In 1955, laws against hunting large mammals were passed. Despite this, illegal hunting and other activities are common inside the park.

The park spreads over a wide area and it is surrounded by 47 streams, 4 lakes which has water throughout the year. This is the only park in Asia where you can find a high herbivorous density amongst the inhabitants. This park consists of a reservoir and dam. Planning a vacation and staying at wildlife resorts gives the best experience for a traveler.
